New Street Fighter character Pietra introduced via UDON comics, could she be headed for Street Fighter 6?

A new character has been introduced to the Street Fighter franchise, not by main developer Capcom, but by UDON Comics in their recent Free Comic Book Day edition of Street Fighter Legends.

Her name is Pietra, and she’s big, burly, buff lumberjack who serves as a bit of an antagonistic force for Blanka. Given that we know Capcom is currently developing Street Fighter 6, we can’t help but wonder if we’ll soon be seeing Pietra in more than just the pages of comics.

You’ll see here a few of the panels as Blanka and Pietra throw down in the middle of a massive forest. She’s clearly able to go toe to toe with everyone’s favorite feral Street Fighter 2 beast, (should Chun be worried about her “Strongest Woman in the World” title?) as she both dishes out and receives powerful blows.

How big of a potential deal is this? Given that Pietra was created by UDON and not directly by Capcom (as far as we know) gives us a bit of pause in terms of hopes that she’ll appear as a playable fighter, but it actually wouldn’t be the first time Capcom ported a comic book character into a game.

Before making her in-game debut in 1998’s Street Fighter Alpha 3, the wildly popular Karin Kanzuki made her very first appearance in the 1996 Sakura Ganbaru! manga series written and illustrated by Masahiko Nakahira.

Every new Street Fighter chapter brings with it a handful of fresh faces that haven’t made it to any previous rosters, and sometimes who have never appeared in the lore at all. Not every newcomer is a home run, but we almost always get at least one or two franchise favorites from each batch.

It’s clear UDON is in very good standing and communication with Capcom seeing as the developer consistently allows the comic to produce artwork, non-canonical side story lines, and now even a brand new franchise fighter. Pietra’s introduction comic was even strategically positioned to be released on Free Comic Book Day, so it does seem they’re making a particular effort to get this newcomer noticed.

Capcom has promised more information on Street Fighter 6 this summer, and so we’ll be keeping eyes and ears on alert for any and everything SF6-related as we march into these hotter months.

Given the little we’ve seen of Pietra thus far, how does she strike you as a potential roster member for the next Street Fighter game? She appears to fit more of the brawler archetype (probably best if she’s not a grappler like Laura, whom she looks a bit like) and it’d be interesting to see what Capcom might do with that ax as a weapon.

Chime into the comments below and let us know your early thoughts on Pietra and her likelihood for appearing in Street Fighter 6.
