That means Brazil have been world champions more times than any other country, and their record has survived every World Cup since their fifth triumph in 2002.
1. Brazil — 5 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002
Brazil stand alone at the top of World Cup history.
The Seleção have won the competition five times, more than any other national team.
Their first championship arrived in Sweden in 1958.
That tournament introduced the world to a 17-year-old Pelé, who helped Brazil defeat Sweden 5–2 in the final.
Four years later, Brazil successfully defended the trophy in Chile.
Then came 1970.
Featuring stars such as Pelé, Jairzinho, Rivellino and Carlos Alberto, Brazil defeated Italy 4–1 in the final and became the first nation to win three World Cups.
More success followed:
1994: Brazil defeated Italy on penalties.
2002: Ronaldo scored twice as Brazil beat Germany 2–0.
That fifth championship remains the benchmark.
Brazil have also played in six World Cup finals and, after the 2026 tournament, hold the all-time record for World Cup match victories with 79.
2. Germany — 4 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1954, 1974, 1990, 2014
Few nations can match Germany’s consistency at the World Cup.
Germany have won four championships, with the first three coming as West Germany.
Their first arrived in 1954 with the famous victory over Hungary.
They returned to the top in 1974, defeating the Netherlands 2–1 in the final.
A third title followed in 1990.
Then, in Brazil in 2014, Mario Götze scored an extra-time winner against Argentina to give Germany their fourth championship.
Germany’s record goes beyond trophies.
They have appeared in eight World Cup finals, more than Brazil’s six, illustrating just how consistently they have competed at the highest level.
2. Italy — 4 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006
Italy share second place with Germany.
The Azzurri became one of football’s first international dynasties by winning consecutive World Cups in:
1934 and 1938.
For decades, they remained one of only two nations to successfully defend the men’s World Cup title.
Their third championship arrived in 1982, when Italy defeated West Germany 3–1 in Madrid.
The fourth came in 2006.
Italy faced France in Berlin, drew 1–1 after extra time and won the penalty shootout 5–3.
That moved them onto four titles — one behind Brazil.
4. Argentina — 3 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1978, 1986, 2022
Argentina have experienced some of the most memorable World Cup triumphs in football history.
Their first championship came on home soil in 1978.
Eight years later, Diego Maradona produced one of the competition’s most legendary individual campaigns as Argentina won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
Their third title required a much longer wait.
At Qatar 2022, Lionel Messi led Argentina to the final against France.
The match finished 3–3 after extra time before Argentina won the penalty shootout 4–2.
Messi finally had his World Cup.
Argentina came extremely close to adding another title just four years later.
They reached the 2026 World Cup final, but Spain defeated them 1–0 after extra time.

5. France — 2 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1998, 2018
France had never won the World Cup before hosting the tournament in 1998.
That changed spectacularly.
Les Bleus defeated defending champions Brazil 3–0 in the final in Paris.
Twenty years later, France returned to the summit.
A talented generation featuring Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and a teenage Kylian Mbappé defeated Croatia 4–2 in the 2018 final.
France have also reached two other finals:
2006 — lost to Italy on penalties
2022 — lost to Argentina on penalties
That gives France two championships from four World Cup final appearances.
5. Uruguay — 2 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 1930, 1950
Uruguay may be a relatively small country, but their place in World Cup history is enormous.
They became the tournament’s first champions in 1930.
Playing at home, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the inaugural World Cup’s final.
Their second championship came 20 years later in Brazil.
Uruguay defeated the hosts 2–1 in the decisive match of the 1950 final group — a result remembered as one of the greatest shocks in football history.
Uruguay have won both title-deciding matches they have played. FIFA lists them with two championships.
5. Spain — 2 World Cup Titles
Winning years: 2010, 2026
Spain are the newest addition to the group of multiple World Cup winners.
Their first title came in South Africa in 2010.
With a generation featuring Andrés Iniesta, Xavi, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and David Villa, Spain reached the final against the Netherlands.
The match went into extra time before Iniesta scored the decisive goal.
Spain 1–0 Netherlands.
Sixteen years later, La Roja did it again.
Spain reached the 2026 final against defending champions Argentina.
The match remained goalless through 90 minutes.
Then, in the 106th minute, Ferran Torres scored the goal that made Spain world champions.
Spain 1–0 Argentina after extra time.
The victory gave Spain their second World Cup and moved them level with France and Uruguay while taking them ahead of England.

8. England — 1 World Cup Title
Winning year: 1966
England complete the list of nations to have won the men’s World Cup.
Their only championship came when they hosted the tournament in 1966.
England faced West Germany at Wembley in the final.
After the match finished 2–2 in normal time, England scored twice during extra time to win:
England 4–2 West Germany.
Geoff Hurst scored three goals and remains one of the most famous figures in England’s World Cup history.
England have yet to lift the trophy again.
Their 2026 campaign did, however, produce their best tournament finish since 1966: they finished third after defeating France 6–4 in the bronze match.
How Many Countries Have Won the World Cup?
Despite almost a century of competition, the answer is only:
Eight countries.
They are:
Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France, Spain, Uruguay and England.
Five are from Europe and three are from South America.
No country from Africa, Asia, North America or Oceania has yet won the men’s FIFA World Cup.
